Honorable Minister Tedros recently expressed his appreciation for MLI, stating, “Although Ethiopia is a country with a significant number of donors, one thing that drew our attention to MLI is its emphasis in building the management and leadership capacity of the Ministry.” With support from MLI, the Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH) in Ethiopia has begun working to scale up and implement the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) throughout the entire health sector.
The Federal Ministry of Health works to advance Ethiopia’s Health Sector Development Plan, or HSDP. HSDP III aims to improve maternal health, reduce child mortality, and combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, TB and other diseases. The Federal Ministry of Health recognizes that successfully implementing this plan requires systematic planning, monitoring and problem-solving in consultation with all stakeholders.

Over the past several months the Ministry of Health and Population has been preparing and writing its second five-year Health Sector Programme-Implementation Plan (NHSP-IP 2) 2010-2015. Preparations for the plan preceded a thorough review of the previous plan. In so doing, the current plan represents a continuation and further refinement of the previous plan to build on past successes, which included the implementation of cost-effective, evidence-based health interventions. The upcoming plan envisions added efforts in the areas of safe motherhood, child health, nutrition, population and family planning. And, due to a rise in non-communicable diseases and injuries, focuses on communication interventions to change behaviour.
